We have discussed a lot about zygomatic implants and why they are an excellent alternative for noncandidates for traditional implants due to a lack of jawbone. But are there any risks?

As in any surgery, problems can always arise. Keep reading and learn more about zygomatic implants complications and how to prevent them.

Zygomatic Implants: Success or Failure?

The good news is that the failure rate for zygomatic implants is meager, and the most common complications appear years later. However, we must understand that any dental implant is a minimally invasive procedure that must receive adequate and periodic maintenance to extend its useful life.

After surgery, it is recommended that patients visit their dentists at least twice a year to check the condition of the implants, clean them and prevent any problems.

What Are the Most Common Complications?

Although rare, they do exist. Let us explain to you the zygomatic implants complications that may occur:

  • Paresthesia

Paresthesia is a sensation of tingling, numbness, or burning in a part of the body. During the placement of dental implants, injury to the inferior alveolar nerve is one of the possible complications that may appear.

This complication usually occurs when dentists do not adequately plan the implants’ placement. Sensory effects related to an injury may be temporary if the damage is partial. But if the nerve injury is complete, the consequences can be long-lasting or permanent.

  • Sinusitis

Sinusitis is the most common complication that can arise from the intervention, although it has a reasonably low prevalence.

Most studies cite sinusitis as the postoperative complication that appears most frequently, with a frequency of 4.9 per 100 implants placed.

  • Peri-implantitis

It is an inflammatory process that affects the tissues surrounding the implant and the bone that functions as a support.

Some risk factors contribute to the appearance of this pathology, for example:

  • Tobacco
  • Poor oral hygiene
  • Poor bone quality of the patient
  • Poor distribution of pressure
  • Postoperative infection

An infection may also occur after surgery. Fortunately, it can be treated with antibiotics and adequate postoperative care without major complications.

General Recommendations

Although everyone is susceptible to some of these complications, you can minimize the probability of risk by having healthy habits such as good hygiene, avoiding alcohol or tobacco, and visiting the dentist regularly.

It is also essential to research the dental clinic where you want this procedure done and ensure they have the necessary infrastructure, equipment, and preparation for the intervention.
